Thanks to Michell’s posts many year’s ago, my son is still enjoying Kiwi Crates. I look forward to the time when TJ is old enough for MEL Science for older kids!

I finished the handspun hat for TJ. This hat was knitted on Zing 4.5 mm DPN needles. The yarn was Falkland fibre Z spun S plied Fireglow colourway. I purled in the round in Portuguese knitting which produces a stockinette fabric on the inside.


        "Design Feature" I took this project to a playdate. I was early, but still managed the pick the project up the wrong way and purled backwards or with the hat inside out, which put the public knit side went to the inside. This happened right at a colour change, so by the time I realized what had happened the next day I decided to just leave it as a "design feature". 🙂 Weaving I will fix, but knitting is still my just for fun art, so I do not rip back very far unless I absolutely have to.
Erica Semicircular shawl Gynx Yarns (no longer dying)

        This shawl was knit in superwashed merino worsted weight yarn emerald colourway on Zing 6mm circular needles. My first set of circular needles were symfonie needles. I knit quite tight, so for this project, I bought just the Zing tips and used the cable from the symfonie interchangeable set. I have to admit the cable on these needles was not my favourite, I prefer the cable on the Chiagoo circs, but don't like the tip on the Chiagoo circs! At the moment Signature Needle Arts stiletto tip is definitely my favourite tip and the cables on the convertible circs is very nice too!


Michelle: finger loop braided ties

My husband was given a dice bag by a friend. A ribbon was used for closing the bag but the ribbon started fraying. I had done a small amount of fingerloop braiding in the past, so I figured I could make a tie for the bag. I needed a refresher, so I looked up some instructions and used the ones here. I tried both braids, but liked how the flat braid turned out better.

Weaving handspun, transferred to Ashford Table Loom. 


Damask fabric for Sasanid Persian cowl, possible wrap, the rest of my yarn arrived the day after the recording and I'm going great guns for the remainder of Spring Break getting this warp wound.

Continuing Spinning study Thick N Thin (started today), will spin the same colourway predrafted and fine. This study stemmed from Felicia Lo's Craftsy/Bluprint class Spinning Dyed Fibers and Sara Lamb's book and video Spin to Weave.



Michelle WIP:

Sorting hat. I finished the "body" of the hat. I'd like to make the back of the hat more wrinkled/folded to match the front, but I'm not sure how to accomplish that without making the front look weird. I started by wet felting the brim over a resist because I wanted it to be thick and firm enough to not be floppy. It ended up too thick, so I cut the brim out of this wet felted fabric and am adding brown to the second side. I had started with white on the inside of the wet felted brim. It may still end up being too thick.

Episode 25: Special Guest Stars

Finished Objects Erica The shawl!!!! Erica was so excited to finish her Half Pi Shawl. In Episode 1 she was swatching for this shawl! Erica has knit a few small shawls, but really wanted a really nice big shawl! She switched between Signature Needle Arts and Chiaogoo circular needles. Erica does love her Signature Needle Arts needles, but found the join on these difficult once the shawl got large and heavy.  Erica would love to hear listeners tips for knitting from center pull balls. Do you knit from the center or the outside? Michelle Michelle has been going through some of her older hand spun yarn and setting the twist in it. She was particularly bad about wet setting a couple years ago and the wash is helping refresh the yarn as well. Some was balled up already so it had to be put back into skeins. Episode 9: Holiday Speed

Finished Objects Erica has a mostly finished and a totally finished object she shares on this episode. Erica plied one of the advent calendar yarns over the holiday break. While travelling in Helsinki, Erica twisted the fringe on her handspun scarf and wet finished it when she returned home. This scarf contains many of her color management study. Michelle finished separating and carding a Jacob fleece. She didn't think it would be that difficult to separate, but it turns out that the divide between the white and brown isn't distinct. She ended up with three colors, but for now is planning to spin the brown and white separately and then ply them to get a barber pole yarn. Works in Progress Erica is has made fairly good progress on both socks. Though the socks for TJ had one heel that ended up with twice as many stitches as the other. She is going to try doubling the decreases on the bigger heel and see how that goes. These socks are being knit from Gynx ...
